ABC Kids Expo: Consumer Demand for Sustainable Products

March 11th, 2015 by Interex Exhibits

Environmentally responsible practices continue to be prominent at trade shows. Similarly, consumers continue to want environmentally friendly and sustainable products. According to Nielsen’s 2014 Global Survey on Corporate Social Responsibility, 55 percent of online consumers worldwide are willing to pay more for goods and services from companies that show a commitment to positive social and environmental impact.

“Consumers around the world are saying loud and clear that a brand’s social purpose is among the factors that influence purchase decisions,” said Amy Fenton, global leader of public development and sustainability at Nielsen. “This behavior is on the rise and it provides opportunities for meaningful impact in our communities, in addition to helping to grow share for brands.”

And it doesn’t stop with eco-friendly products. Consumers, and parents in particular, are showing a greater commitment to purchasing organic products for their children. According to the OTA’s U.S. Families’ Organic Attitudes & Beliefs 2014 Tracking Study, eight of ten American families have bought organic products one or more times in the past two years, and almost half the time,  the major reason was concern over their children’s health. OTA also found that organic sales in the U.S. in 2013 increased to a record $35.1 billion, and that trend is expected to continue.

Why is this important for trade shows and exhibitors? It’s critical to understand consumer trends in order to effectively market to them and to the companies that market to them.

The ABC Kids Expo, for instance, has shown a commitment to promoting and singling out environmentally friendly brands with its Naturally Kids showcase. ABC Kids is a private trade show for retail buyers and manufacturers in the children’s products industry and was recently named the fastest-growing show in 2013 by the Trade Show Executive Gold 100 Awards & Summit. In 2014, there were over 3,200 booths, 969 exhibitors and 12,462 in total attendance. In addition, 245 exhibitors attended for the first time.

In particular, Naturally Kids is what the show calls a “juried pavilion,” meaning companies must apply and meet certain criteria in order to exhibit in this area, and an independent committee reviews the applications. The selection criteria exists to ensure that accepted companies are committed to producing eco-friendly and sustainable products as well as products that are healthy for children. Acceptance into the area, in addition to a $350 application fee, earns qualified companies unique carpeting, drapes, signage, publicity and targeted promotion to retailers.

The ABC Kids Expo has shown a continued desire to showcase products from environmentally responsible manufacturers. “The ABC Kids Expo is one of the industry events Liapela looks forward to most each year,” said Alejandra James, founder of high-end baby product retailer Liapela. “When we attend events like the ABC Kids Expo, we look for modern, simple, practical, and eco-friendly products that offer the functionality and style our customers want.”

ABC Kids 2015 will be held October 18-21 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Naturally Kids is accepting applications through April.
