Trade Show Research: SEMA Show

The SEMA Show, organized by the Specialty Equipment Market Association, is an annual gathering of professionals in the automotive specialty products industry. According to TSNN, it was the seventh-largest trade show in the U.S. in 2014, as measured by net square feet. The 2015 installment will take place November 3-6 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Demographics & Motivation

The SEMA Show anticipates an attendance of 60,000 qualified buyers, 130,000 industry professionals and over 3,000 qualified media.

The breakdown of buyers is as follows: 40 percent executive management, 29 percent general management, 20 percent general staff and 11 percent skilled trade. In addition, 87 percent of buyers either make or recommend purchasing decisions for their companies. Buyers attend SEMA for the following reasons:

-       See new products: 87 percent

-       Get ideas: 78 percent

-       Keep up on trends: 72 percent

-       See existing vendors: 60 percent

-       Find new vendors: 65 percent

Show Floor & Exhibitors

SEMA expects to have over 2,300 exhibitors and 2,000 new products to show off. Members of SEMA and the Tire Industry Association (TIA) receive a significant discount on exhibit space. The member cost per square foot is $19.95, while the non-member cost is $34.95.

The show floor will be divided into 12 distinct sections: Business Services, Collision Repair & Refinish, Global Tire Expo Powered By TIA, Hot Rod Alley, Mobile Electronics & Technology, Powersports & Utility Vehicles, Racing & Performance, Restoration Marketplace, Restyling & Car Care Accessories, Tools & Equipment, Trucks, SUVs & Off-Road and Wheels & Accessories. In order to exhibit in one of these sections, at least 75 percent of the product on display must represent that industry category.

Marketing and Education

Some marketing perks are included in the cost of renting space at SEMA. For instance, each exhibitor receives a company listing in the official show directory, show pocket guide and online. SEMA also offers a variety of sponsorship opportunities, detailed here. SEMA shows a further commitment to the successful experiences of its exhibitors by offering an exhibitor summit to help companies learn how to minimize cost and maximize ROI. This year’s summit will be held June 8-10 at LVCC.

The SEMA educational program will include dozens of free seminars on topics such as industry trends, technology and best practices. There are also two paid sessions scheduled that will focus on collision repair.

New in 2015

According to Tire Review, the 2015 SEMA Show will feature a new expansion area in order to take on more exhibitors. The First-Time and Featured Exhibitors area will be outside, south of the LVCC and will also serve as a transportation hub for the entire show.
